(MAINNEWS) – – U.S. Senator Bob Casey underwent surgery for prostate cancer on Tuesday, his office said, adding that the procedure went well and should mean that he will not require further treatment.

Casey, the senior U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, announced in January that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and would require surgery.

The 62-year-old Democrat has served in the Senate since 2007.

“Senator Casey and his family appreciate the well-wishes and extraordinary support from every corner of the commonwealth (of Pennsylvania) and he looks forward to getting back to a normal schedule after a brief period of rest and recovery,” his office said on Twitter.

Casey’s Democratic Party controls 51 of 100 Senate seats, with Republicans holding 49. He would face re-election in 2024 if he decides to seek a fourth term.
